Cool this is the level I will be going. Could you point me in the
direction of the bb man pages? Is it on hobbit? Please excuse the
ignorance still cutting my teeth on *nix and hobbit.

The protocol is defined in bb man page. If you're writing socket level
code, you don't
have to execute the bb program, just open a socket to the server on port
1984 and issue
a status message.
