prefix your command with "xymoncmd" and it will setup all of the config 
variables for you. Like

~/server/bin/xymoncmd xymongen --purplelog=/tmp/PURP


Another way of doing what you want to do, is to query xymond:

    xymon 127.0.0.1 "xymondboard color=purle fields=hostname,testname"
