hobbit startup problems

Greetings,

I just did a fresh install of the most recent hobbit using the 
directions at the hobbit site 
(http://hobbitmon.sourceforge.net/docs/install.html), however whenever i 
do a ./server/hobbit.sh start i get a hobbitd <defunct> and then nothing 
else happens..

I am running the following:
Linux phantom 2.6.12-gentoo-r10 #1 SMP i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 
2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
