My screen resolution is 1680x1050 at both home and work, though my 
laptop is bigger.  That doesn't really say much, though... I rarely run 
with my browser maximized.  Also, there are a number of people in the 
company that regularly use netbooks with significantly smaller screens. 
  That would drive my nuts, but they love the light weight.

If possible, you should make things work well in a screen width of 1024, 
but if that becomes impractical, keep it below 1280.

That said, I would also like to have an effective interface to use on 
the Blackberry phones issued to some of our employees, with the ability 
to ack/enable/disable alarms.  Some of these are running very old 
software, but if it were to work effectively with version 4.5 and later, 
that would be good enough for me.

I don't know that it matters much for this discussion, except in what 
capability I am used to relative to what might be available in the 
newest development branches... my server is running the xymon 4.3.0 
package in Debian lenny-backports.
