I suspect (hope) that a db backend will be an option, not a requirement.

The real difficulty with the web interface is that it's not fully abstracted from the service. Many of the components are generated within the C code. Adding that DB layer actually makes setup and configuration of Xymon more difficult. I've attempted to work with Nagios (which uses a DB backend) on several occasions and I always come back to Xymon for it's simplicity.
