with only one sentence it's quite hard to guess what's wrong.

could you please describe which linux you're running (os type, version),how you installed hobbit ?

(packages, compiled from scratch).

the packages versions comes with a /etc/init.d/hobbit script.

please try as root
/etc/init.d/hobbit start
