Try doing the whole thing from tar -- see if that helps...

$ Tar xfzv hobbit-snapshot.tar.gz

Just downloaded it from Henrik's site and it all went no problem...

How are you downloading it?  Commandline ftp?  Make sure you are in
binary mode when you download the file ("bin" within ftp)
