One feature nagios has that I really like is the ability to nominate dependent devices.
ie. server1 has a depends on cisco1.
If cisco1 fails, don't worry about sending alerts for server1, since you can assume it is not visible.

Another cool thing is parents - used to map out the network.
Nagios also uses the "group" concept a lot. Put hosts/services in a group and only work with groups.
