First, I want to say "thank you" to all of you who have taken the time
to play around with Hobbit and provided feedback, either directly or
via the mailing list. I've been quite surprised by the level of
interest that Hobbit has generated over the past couple of weeks -
it's been much more than I anticipated.
I've packaged up a new beta-release for all of you to play with.
You'll find it at http://www.hswn.dk/beta/hobbit-4.0-beta5.tar.gz . It
is not on Sourceforge yet - their upload server has run out of disk
space! - but I'll see if I can get it uploaded to SF tomorrow, which
should give better download speeds for you than my DSL line.
I had hoped that this would be a "release candidate", but I am still
not sure I've completely nailed down the problem that makes hobbitd go
into zombie-mode, causing all of your hosts to disappear from the
display.
Therefore, I've added some more paranoid memory-checks to the code for
this release - so you may actually see *more* crashes than you did
with beta-4. However the crashes should make it easier to pinpoint the
exact problem.
If you see this problem, please let me know that it's still there. If
you are running Hobbit on a system with the GNU libc 2.x (e.g. any
recent Linux system), I would very much like you to do a
export MALLOC_CHECK=2
before starting Hobbit, as this adds even more memory debugging code.
There are lots of other little fixes and improvements, see the full
list at http://www.hswn.dk/beta/Changes
Upgrading from beta-4 -> beta-5: Unpack beta-5, run "configure",
"make" and "make setup". It will *not* overwrite your configuration
files (despite the warning). I recommend that you copy the new
hobbitserver.cfg and hobbitgraph.cfg files to your ~hobbit/server/etc
directory, since some settings were added.
Thanks for your help with testing!
Regards,
Henrik
