[Xymon] Apache ignoring .htaccess

Yes.  I am getting the following error in the apache error.log. some 
identifiable information masked

[Wed Sep 25 22:44:11.135589 2019] [core:alert] [pid 7282] [client IP 
ADDRESS:55174] /home/xymon/server/www/.htaccess: Invalid command 
'USERNAME:HASHED PASSWORD', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module 
not included in the server configuration
