You didn't look close enough. The code was changed from

       xymondresult = sendmessage("xymondboard ....
       board = getsendreturnstr(sres, 1);
       if ((xymondresult != XYMONSEND_OK) || (board == NULL)) {

Notice the new assignment of "board" to something sensible before
it is tested.
