Per the IEEE standard, auto negotiate must be enabled when using GiG E.
It's a standard all manufactures are suppose to follow.

ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full autoneg off
error is Operation not supported and not setting speed duplex autoneg.

There are known problems with communication between the vmware guest and
the
vmware host. I have to execute
ethtool -K eth0 tx off
before I can communicate between the vmware guest on my laptop and my
laptop.
Maybe this can help.
