Clients going Clear instead of Purple

I monitor several remote networks and servers behind firewalls.  I monitor the firewall with the testip tag to avoid DNS lookups, and I use the noping tag for clients behind firewalls.  On a couple of occasions a client has stopped reporting and instead of all tests going purple, they go clear.  I suspect that it has to do with the noping tag.  Should this be happening?  Do I have my bbhost file configured wrong?
