Just a wild thought - do you have an environment variable called TMPDIR??
Near the top of the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg0.run package  (which is
the most recent I have handy) there's this line:

     TMPROOT=${TMPDIR:=/tmp}

If $TMPDIR has a value, it'll get used instead of /tmp, right??
