A general technique (not Hobbit-specific) that can help you trace things
down later can be used when building an app:

./configure 2>&1 | tee configure.out
make 2>&1 | tee make.out
make test 2>&1 | tee make-test.out
make install 2>&1 | tee make-install.out

Those *.out files often times yield many clues...
