Not the alerts.log but the mail.log under /var/log (most likely). Try running the 'mailq' command to see if they are stuck in queue. Can successfully send a mail from the command-line (use something like mailx)? If the mailq is showing lots of email or your
server rejects you, it's likely a mailserver configuration issue.
