complaining unless by default neither of them do what it wants.  I don't
know of a newer or better egrep though to get.

Anyone got any ideas?

Have you thought about just getting the pecompiled packages? It may be easier. I only compile when I have to.

freetype is available.

Regardless, perhaps your configure cannot find 'egrep' because it's not in your PATH?
